1 billion dollars in 17 days: Barbie is a hit at record speed

Greta Gerwig enters the history books.

Say hello to Barbillion ! The summer of 2023 in cinemas will have been all pink. After only 17 days in theaters, Barbie has just passed the milestone of one billion dollars in worldwide box office receipts, including $459 million in North America and $572 million internationally.

A historic feat since Greta Gerwig becomes the very first director (solo) to cross such a threshold. (Frozen 1 & 2 had been co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, just like Captain Marvelby Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck).

Another record: Barbie is the eighth film from Warner Bros. to enter the club of billionaires (in 100 years of history of the studio), but in 17 days, it is especially the fastest to reach such a threshold. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 took two more days (19 days).

Since the pandemic, Barbie is only the sixth film to pass the billion mark (after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion And Avatar: 2).

On the side of Warner Bros. we savor (via Variety):”Barbie blew up all our forecasts, even the most optimistic! This is a historic moment for Barbie, such a funny, moving and entertaining story, which resonates with all generations of moviegoers by making the whole world all pink. We can’t wait to see how far Barbie can go to the real world!

At present, Barbie grossing $1.031 billion worldwide, and ranks 45th among the biggest hits of all time. He should easily enter the top 20… and more.
