A 13-year-old boy finally managed to beat Tetris!

By crossing level 157, the young player crashed the title, which was not planned to go this far.

One year after the film’s release Tetris worn by Taron Egerton, the famous brick game returns to the forefront, but this time, in real life!

For the first time since its release on the NES in June 1984, the game has been officially “beaten”! We had to wait 40 years, but this time, the bricks lost. And it was a young boy of 13 who achieved this feat.

Willis Gibson became the first person to “beat” the NES version of Tetris. If there is no real final victory with any narrative, the game does however break down and ends up crashing after passing certain levels. Willis is the first human to reach this point, breaking level 157, far beyond what the game designers had imagined. Indeed, at level 29, blocks start falling faster than the game can process. It took until 2011 for a player to reach level 30, and players won’t reach level 95 until 2022. At level 138, the game starts to offer unusual color combinations and therefore ends up crashing. .

It should be noted that Artificial Intelligence had done better. An AI called StackRabbit had pushed a modified version of Tetris until level 237, where the game finally reached a kill screen. This project inspired Willis who wanted to try his luck and ended up crossing level 157 on December 21. A video game feat hailed by the CEO of Tetris in person, Maya Rogers: “Congratulations to Blue Scuti (Willis) for achieving this extraordinary feat. A feat that defies all preconceived limitations of this legendary game.”
