The Emperor played by Joaquin Phoenix conquered the world for Joséphine de Beauharnais.

This summer, Apple made a lot of noise by unveiling the Napoleon biopic trailer by Ridley Scott. The filmmaker and his main actors, Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, have since explained that this film will not retrace the journey of the French emperor in a heroic way, but will also show how much blood he had on his hands.

Napoleon as seen by Ridley Scott: “I compare him to Alexander the Great. Adolf Hitler. Stalin…”

“He started from nothing. He conquered everything.”said the first poster of Napoleon, with a close-up portrait of the Phoenix staring the viewer straight in the eye. A new poster, dedicated this time to his beloved Josephine, shows Vanessa Kirby in profile, and the teaser completes the previous one. Among all his exploits, Napoleon notably conquered “the world, for Josephine.”

A complementarity that the director of Gladiator and Last duel tease in the new numberEmpireexplaining that “the adaptation work was quite complicated, because as soon as you start talking about Napoleon, it’s easy to talk about all his battles. So we kept talking go back to basics, to Joséphine.”

Joséphine de Beauharnais, who was the emperor’s wife, will hold a central place in the film, but her personality was not easy to decipher for the actress: “The most complicated thing for me is that in each book, she is barely mentioned. Whether it’s stories told by people who really knew her or books written later, documents, testimonies or even Napoleon’s letters… Each tells something completely different. It was just a huge contradiction. Every time I thought I had grasped it, I said to myself: ‘Okay, that’s who she was, I think I can hang on to that’, something completely contradicted that thought.”

Napoleon will be released in cinemas on November 22.
