Acide: Guillaume Canet surviving in an environmental thriller (trailer)

The director of La Nuée is back with an eco-apocalyptic film presented at Cannes.

Guillaume Canet plays the lead role ofAcidthe second feature film of Just Philippot who distinguished himself with The Cloud in 2021, his first film which won two prizes at the Gérardmer Fantastic Film Festival. Acid tells the story of Michal, a divorced father struggling to raise his daughter Selma (Patience Munchenbach). During a heat wave, corrosive acid rain ravaged France and caused an unprecedented catastrophe. Michal decides to reunite his daughter and his ex-wife (played by Laetitia Dosch) to survive an impending societal collapse.

This new film is a continuation of The Cloud, which also dealt with the broad theme of nature running amok causing unprecedented catastrophe (in the form of a locust rebellion). Here, it’s acid rain, and the trailer reveals some images of the visual effects used to represent the immense damage. The atmosphere is eminently dark and the trailer announces an uncompromising choice of treatment, fully assuming the gravity of its atmosphere. The images also evoke the importance of the family nucleus and the dilemma of disaster films between individuality and solidarity. Acid will be released in cinemas on September 20, 2023.
