The Oscar-winning director of Nomadland is preparing Hamnet, adaptation of the novel by Maggie O’Farrell.

After Lucius in Gladiator 2, Paul Mescal will embody William Shakespeare ! The actor of Normal People just got involved in Hamnetthe next film from Chloe Zhao. The Chinese filmmaker, praised in Hollywood in 2020 for Nomadlandthen booed in 2021 for The Eternals, prepares his return. The Oscar-winning director has taken the time to breathe and is currently working on a new project.

According to Vogue, it will be Hamnet, adaptation of the novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell (published in 2020). “This book is simply devastating.”comments Paul Mescal. “I can not wait !” The actor will share the poster with Jessie Buckley (Fargo), “one of our current big stars”, according to the actor, who concludes: “And Chloé is someone I can’t wait to get to know. I can’t wait to get into the heads of her characters” .

Not really a Shakespeare biopic nor a variation of one of his works, Hamnet will be a fictional historical film, set in England in 1580, in the midst of the Black Death. “The end of times is near, but life goes on and a young Latin teacher, penniless and harassed by an abusive father, falls in love with an extraordinary and eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who roams her family’s lands with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer…”
