After the success of Euphoria, Hunter Schafer no longer wants to play transgender roles

“I don’t want to be reduced to that,” argues the interpreter of Jules Vaughn.

Revealed in 2019 by the first season of the flagship HBO series, Euphoria, Hunter Schafer confided in GQ on his career plans. As we impatiently await season three of Sam Levinson's baby, and her reprising the role of Jules Vaughnthe young transgender girl whose Street (Zendaya) falls in love, the actress explains that she no longer wants to play transgender characters:

“I don't want to be (reduced to) that, and I find it ultimately demeaning for me and for what I want to do. (…) I've worked so hard to get to where I am, I “I had these very difficult times in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.”

Far from biting the hand that fed her, the twenty-five-year-old young woman describes Euphoria as an incredibly enriching experience, especially the special episode, “Fuck everyone except the sea blobs” which she co-wrote with the creator of the series, and which she describes today as “one of the most artistically satisfying things (she has) ever done”.

However, the interpreter, who recently appeared in the casting of Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird, will soon be done with this role, and those who can resemble it. She even admits to having refused “tons of trans roles”which she admits is a “privilege”. However, she doesn't want her gender identity to define her career:

“I know that I am one of the most well-known transgender people in the media today, and I feel responsible, and perhaps a little guilty, for not having been more of a spokesperson. (…) But ultimately, I really believe that not making it the centerpiece of what I do will allow me to go further. And I think going further and doing awesome things, for the sake of of the movement, will be much more useful than talking about it all the time.”

In short, at twenty-five years old, Hunter Schafer wants to look to the future. Moreover, the projects are multiplying. Recently, she was seen alongsideEmma Stone, Jesse Plemons And William Dafoe in the trailer for Kinds of Kindnessthe next film from Yorgos Lanthimos which will be released in June.
