How The Marvels laid the foundation stone for the Young Avengers

Another Young Avengers was originally supposed to be in The Marvels

Iman Vellani recounts the filming of this scene at the end of the film which opens the door for young superheroes for the rest of the MCU.

Iman Vellani had his “Nick Fury” moment at the end of The Marvels. Not in a post-credits scene (although it seriously looked like one), but like Samuel L. Jackson at the end of Iron Man, she made a meaningful recruitment visit for the continuation of the MCU saga, in the final moments of the film. Spoiler alert!

Kamala Khan went to see Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), the young archer of Hawkeyestudent of Clint Barton, to ask him to be part of something bigger, by joining his emerging team of young heroes: the Young Avengers. And she suggests in passing that Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), who also became a superhero in Quantumania, would be interested in being one as well. Moreover, it was she who was initially supposed to be in this scene opposite Kamala:

“There was a version of that recruiting scene, in an old script, where she was there. But we never shot it“, tell Iman Vellani at THR. “And then I was told one day that we were going to do reshoots, film new scenes (after the main shoot) to include this particular scene, but not with Cassie, with another Young Avenger.”. So it was Kate Bishop who was ultimately chosen.

What does it matter for Iman Vellaniwho jumped to the ceiling when she had this extra script in hand: “I was like crazy. I immediately rewatched Iron Man to remember that post-credits scene and texted Nia DaCosta (the director). All caps. I said: I can’t believe I have the honor of doing this. It’s crazy!”

Kamala Khan will therefore be back soon with the other young superheroes of the MCU. We should see America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), the dimension manipulator crossed in Doctor Strange 2but also Eli Bradley (Elijah Richardson) seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier and who should be Patriot, a super-soldier. Finally, Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy Maximoff (Jett Klyne), Wanda’s children, who we saw in WandaVisionseem destined to become Speed and Wiccan!

These young budding avengers are therefore intended to succeed their parents or their mentors on the big screen. And in the comics, they face, as if by chance, Kang the Conqueror! So the Young Avengers will they be the real heroes of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (in 2026) or Avengers: Secret Wars (in 2027)?
