Are the Sex Education posters inspired by those of Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac?

The choral promo for season 4 of the Netflix series on adolescent emotions and that of the “porn film” with Charlotte Gainsbourg, same fight?

The fourth and final season of Sex Education begins September 21 on Netflix. There has already been a trailer, obviously, but it is the series of character posters that particularly interests us. A series of close-up faces of the heroes and heroines (Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Asa Butterfield, Aimee Lou Wood, Connor Swindells… even Gillian Anderson) of the series – whose faces seem to be in the full rapture of orgasm.

Doesn’t that remind you of anything? But if, let’s see, the series of character posters used to promote Nymphomaniacthe two-part “porn film” of Lars Von Trier released in 2014. With Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stacy Martin, Willem Dafoe, Stellan Skarsgard, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen and even Uma Thurman in orgasm mode (special mention to Shia LaBeouf who keeps his cigarette in his mouth):

The thing is, Netflix played a good joke on us: the characters are actually singing, as shown in the final poster bringing them together in choir mode:

In any case, the promotion of Nymphomaniac seems very inspired by the Beautiful Agony site (itself loosely connected to the short film Blowjob by Andy Warhol). Founded in 2004, this pornographic site (subtitled “facets of the little death”, in French in the text) allows its users to post videos of their faces in full “delight” – their faces, and nothing else , and they are certainly not in full choir. Beautiful Agony tells us that the HD restoration process of the first videos published, almost twenty years ago, is in full swing. Blu-ray coming soon? The complete 14 films of Lars Von Trier (including Nymphomaniacof course) comes out on November 7 in a large and beautiful box set.
