Argylle: how Matthew Vaughn hid an unreleased Beatles song for eight months

The English director had the title Now And Then in his possession well before its release and he had to hide its existence from everyone.

Argyle, the new action-spy comedy from Matthew Vaughn is in theaters since Wednesday. And in the number of First currently on newsstands (with Dune 2 on the cover), the filmmaker tells us how he managed to obtain the rights to Now And Then, the unreleased Beatles song released at the beginning of November, in order to use it in the film’s soundtrack. A first : ” And a lot of pride! For eight months, I had a Beatles song on my phone that no one in the world had heard. And I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone about it, it was torture! “, he assures. “ The only time people got to hear it before its official release was when I was showing Argyle in private or during test screenings. And people asked me: ”That title isn’t bad, what is it?” ”Oh, nothing, don’t worry.” (Laughs.) »

Initially, I was looking for a love song that wasn’t too obvious, because it’s still present in the film for eleven minutes. It worked, but nothing more, with I‘ll stand by you of the Pretenders. And then I had a meeting with Giles Martin, the son of George Martin, the producer of the Beatles. He said to me: ‘Would you like a new Beatles song?’ It was perfect, we didn’t have to change anything in the editing to make it fit. We even used it as an instrumental version, and it was much better than the arrangements we had recorded. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and all the Beatles’ rights holders. I explained to them why I needed this song, even the lyrics of which were spot on: “Now and Then”, it perfectly summed up the relationship of the two characters in the film. Sometimes you don’t have to look, destiny falls on you! »
