Barbie snubbed at the Oscars? “There’s no reason to be sad,” says Margot Robbie

The star will not have a statuette for best actress in 2024, but she has no regrets. On the contrary…

When the 2024 Oscar nominations fell last week, Oppenheimer was the favorite with no less than 13 nominations, but his big competitor from last summer also did well: barbie appears in 8 categories. Notably best film and best supporting actors for America Ferrara and Ryan Gosling. On the other hand, no Margot Robbie in the running for the Oscar for best actress, nor Greta Gerwig for its realization.

The big forgotten ones from the 2024 Oscar nominations

I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists and so many great films, had reacted Gosling following these appointments. And I never thought I’d say this, I’m even more incredibly honored and proud to have played a plastic doll named Ken, but there’s no Ken without Barbie, and there’s no Ken. There’s no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who are the two people most responsible for this historic and world-famous film.

America Ferrara also regretted the absence of mention of the actress and the director, even if they are both represented as producers since barbie is named among the best films. About the star of the project, she explained: “What Margot has accomplished as an actress is extraordinary. Her thing is that she is an actress who manages to make you believe that everything is easy, so maybe people believed it? Margot, she’s a magician whenever she’s on screen, a master at it.”

This week, it’s Robbie who reacts to the question. Invited to a discussion organized by SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union which made a lot of noise last year during the strike, she explains that she does not consider having been snubbed at the Oscars. On the contrary, according to her, the crazy success of barbie -not just at the box office, but via the social phenomenon it sparked- is in itself a huge victory.

“There is no reason to be sad when you have received so much success, she considers, relayed by Variety. Of course, I think Greta should have been nominated as a director, because what she accomplished is something that only happens once in a career, in a lifetime. And she’s the one who wore it, we owe her that.”

“It’s been an incredible year for all films, she continues, saying she was “ecstatic” learning that barbie was nominated 8 times for the Oscars. Everyone who was selected is incredibly talented, and being nominated among the best films is the icing on the cake. We did barbie hoping to shake up the culture, we wanted this film to have an impact. That’s what he did, but in a way we wouldn’t have dared to imagine. This is our greatest reward.

How people react to this film is what matters most. When I see all the discussion it’s caused… or look at how many people are wearing pink in this room today. I had never experienced this before. Not that much. I’ve been in superhero blockbusters that are very popular, but the feeling was different. Even today, it’s something else. I can’t think of another example of a film that has had such a cultural impact. It’s amazing to be in the thick of it.”

The 2024 Oscars ceremony will take place on March 10.
