Oppenheimer East the big winner of the 81st Golden Globeswith no less than five awards received that night: best dramatic film, best direction for Christopher Nolanbest actor for Cillian Murphybest supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr.and best soundtrack for Ludwig Göransson.

Accepting the trophy from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Nolan immediately paid tribute to Heath Ledgerfor whom he took the stage in 2009, to receive the actor’s posthumous Golden Globe for his role in The Dark Knight. He himself had already been nominated for his production of Memento (200), Inception (2010) and Dunkirk (2017), but he had never won this prize before. “Thank you Golden Globes, reacted Christopher Nolan. The only time I have previously stood on this stage was to honor our dear friend Heath Ledger. It was complicated for me. In the middle of the speech, I caught Robert Downey Jr.’s look of love and support, and I still see it today. I thought accepting this award for myself would be easier, but as a director, I realize I can only do it by honoring the people around me. As directors, we bring together talents and try to get the best out of them. Robert, Cillian, my partner in crime of 20 years, Matt wherever you are, Florence, Emily… All our amazing team. A few moments later, it was Cillian Murphy who was honored with the Golden Globe for best actor. Starting by thanking the filmmaker for “the confidence placed in (him) for 20 years”the Irish actor spoke about their previous collaborations without naming them: the trilogy Dark Knight, Inception And Dunkirkbefore getting this title role‘Oppenheimer.

“I knew from the first time I was invited onto a Christopher Nolan set that it was differenthe said after having fun with the lipstick stains on his nose. We could see thanks to the level of rigor, concentration, involvement, and the total absence of chairs for the actorsthat we were in the hands of a master director, a visionary.”

By accepting the award for best supporting role for his incarnation of Lewis Strauss, Robert Downey Jr. for his part focused on his humor full of irony and self-deprecation. Still surprised that such a serious project was able to raise nearly a billion dollars at the box office, he was amused by the criticism of “subtlety” of his character, a role allowing him (he quotes) to “relaunch your career.” When thanking his wife, Susan Downey, he uses the same mocking tone: “She has become an expert when it comes to getting me out of my comfort zone. But I need to feel safe!”
