Billy Dee Williams Likes Donald Glover, 'But There's Only One Lando Calrissian'

The original performer, however, validates his “21st century” incarnation, which Glover should continue as a series for Disney+.

First appeared in The Empire Strikes Backin 1980, the character of Lando Calrissian has since returned in several films in the universe of Star Wars: in Return of the Jedi (1983) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), still performed by Billy Dee Williamsbut also in Solothe spin-off released in 2018 where he was this time performed by Donald Glover. An actor who should soon return to this role for a series on Disney+.

Interviewed by Radio Times about this new project in the world of Star Wars, Billy Dee Williams does not confirm his own involvement in the series dedicated to Lando. He responds with a laugh that “if we (him) offers a lot of money” he could come back, but he especially takes advantage of being interviewed about the George Lucas saga to state loud and clear that despite all the admiration he has for his successor, he considers himself the one and only Lando.

“I had a very pleasant lunch with him,” he said of Donald. “He is an absolutely charming young man. And extremely talented. But I don't see it… in fact, when it comes to speaking of Lando Calrissian, I find that there is only one Lando Calrissian. And it was me who created him. Donald is part of a whole new generation. He will make what he has to create, he will bring things to this character, because he is a very talented young actor, full of imagination. And it is no longer up to me to tell him what he should do with Lando, now. J “I took care of it during the 20th century, now it's up to him to protect it.”

For the moment, no filming or broadcast date has been officially announced for the series dedicated to Lando Calrissian. We simply know that Donald Glover co-wrote it with his brother and Justin Siemen (Dear White People), but the studio has yet to officially announce its launch.
