Bradley Cooper bans chairs on his film sets

During a meeting orchestrated by Variety In Directors on Directors, Bradley Cooper confided during a face to face meeting with Spike Lee. The latter declared that there were no chairs on the sets of the films he directed.

“There are no chairs on my sets. I’ve always hated chairs, and I feel like your energy drops as soon as you sit down.“, expressed Bradley Cooper.

Bradley Cooper is not the only director to prohibit a minimum of comfort for his teams. Anne Hathaway had confided in 2020 to having experienced the same phenomenon, in an interview linked to his collaboration with the director of The Dark Knight Rises And Interstellar: Christopher Nolan. The latter declared that the filmmaker did not allow chairs during filming.

The information was, however, denied by the team of the main person concerned, who on the other hand highlighted the ban on mobile phones and cigarettes. The chairs mentioned by Anne Hathaway was in fact the ones that directors usually use around the video monitor.

“Anne was referring to the chairs of the director and his assistants that are located just behind the cameras: they are installed according to hierarchy and not for physical needs, and Chris decides not to use his, but that does not mean that he banned all the chairs from his tray. The cast and crew can sit wherever they want, whenever they feel the need. They don’t deprive themselves of it, moreover.“, the director’s team then shared with IndieWire.

Yet, Robert Downey Jr. also recently declared at Variety that there were no chairs on the setOppenheimer.

“With Nolan…we were doing tests in IMAX, it was crazy. You had to walk back and forth and sit back in your chair – oh no, there weren’t even any chairs!“, said the actor, hilarious.

Maestro will be released on December 20 2023 on Netflix. Will the director then be nominated for the Oscars against Nolan, who was a hit this year thanks to his historic film?
