Cannes 2024: Xavier Dolan will chair the Un Certain Regard jury

The director of Just the End of the World, Grand Prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, takes the lead in the most colorful selection of the meeting.

In December, we learned that the Jury of the Official Selection of the 77th Cannes Film Festival will be chaired by the American director, screenwriter and actress Greta Gerwig. Yesterday, the meeting organizing committee made another major announcement: Xavier Dolan will hold the reins of the Un Certain Regard selection. A mandate which confirms the choice of young people (Greta Gerwig and Xavier Dolan are 40 and 34 years old respectively) made by the Festival for this edition.

The Quebec actor, director, screenwriter and producer, who succeeds the American actor John C. Reilyis in no risk of being disoriented, he who has had his habits on the Croisette since his beginnings: his first two films, Imaginary lovers And Laurence Anyways were both presented in Un Certain Regard. With his following films, Xavier Dolan entered the Official Selection, of which he was the youngest several times: Mommy won the Jury Prize ex-aequo with Goodbye language (Jean-Luc Godard) in 2014, Just the end of the world the Grand Prix in 2016, and his latest film, Matthias and Maxime, had the honor of appearing there five years ago. Dolan was even part of the main selection jury gathered around the Coen brothers in 2015.

Xavier Dolan opens up about his premature retirement: “I no longer have the desire”

But this time, Xavier Dolan goes back to basics. The artist states:

“Even more than making films, discovering the talents of other filmmakers has always been essential in my personal and professional journey. This mandate will be an opportunity to dedicate myself, with the members of the Un Certain Regard Jury, to something artistically essential: films, and their quest for truth.”

Remember that this selection highlights the rare birds of international cinema, the talents of tomorrow, who, like Xavier Dolan, could perhaps become today's references.

Last year, this selection presented some of the public and critical successes of the year 2023 (The Animal Kingdom, Simple like Sylvain, both recently cesared). The Un Certain Regard Prize was awarded to the flamboyant How to Have Sex by Molly Manning Walker.
