Channing Tatum wants to remake Ghost: “We have the rights, but we're going to do it differently”

The Magic Mike actor could see himself in the role of Patrick Swayze.

With its remake of 21 Jump Street as an excellent comedy (its sequel is just as funny), Channing Tatum revealed at the beginning of last year that it had acquired the rights to Ghost. We are sharing the details again to wait until the rebroadcast of this cult film, this Sunday evening on W9.

Jerry Zucker's romantic comedy with Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, which was a hit in the early 1990s in the cinema and has since been a hit on television, could thus return, in another form. Tatum thus details Variety that he could see himself reprising the role of the deceased husband played by Swayze in the original, but that this new version would not be a copy and paste of the cult film: “We have the rights, indeed. Yes, we have the rights to Ghost. But we would do it differently. (referring to his “problematic stereotypes”) I think he needs to evolve a little.”

Magic Mike: Channing Tatum is ready for his last dance with Salma Hayek

Channing Tatum made these revelations as part of a long portrait published by the magazine on the occasion of his ultimate return as Magic Mike, The Last Dance, scheduled for Valentine's Day 2023 in theaters, and this successful saga about male striptease is also available as a television show on HBO Max. For the moment, he says nothing more about this potential remake of Ghostbut Hollywood magazine notes that this is not the first time that he has attempted to update a cult romantic comedy: he was once attached to a new version of Splash with Jillian Bell (Mercedes in 22 Jump Street). The duo would have taken up the codes of Ron Howard's mermaid film released in 1984 with Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks, but to reverse the roles: Tatum would have been the mermaid and her partner the human who falls in love with her.
