Charlize Theron could have played Jason’s mother in a Friday the 13th series

After playing a real serial killer, she could have slipped into the shoes of Pamela Voorhees.

In 1980, spectators trembled before Friday 13. Riding the wave of successHalloween, released a few years earlier, this new slasher film quickly acquired the status of a cult horror film franchise. In total, eight sequels, one remake and twelve films in total bring back to life the killer in the hockey mask: Jason Voorhees. The latter, still a child, drowned in Crystal Lake. Since that day, his mother, Pamela Voorhees, grieving, takes revenge on those responsible and sows death during her murderous madness. His end in front of his son’s eyes makes him Lake’s Crystal Killer. From now on, he will haunt the place.

After the release of the reboot in 2009, the last film in the franchise, the idea of a sequel hovered for a while without anything coming to fruition. Until the end of 2022, it is announced that Jason will return in a prequel series titled Crystal Lake. Signed Brian Fuller (writer on the series Hannibal), ordered by Peacok, produced by A24 and Victor Miller (screenwriter of the original film), the series was to deconstruct the feature films and began after the death of the character. Fuller said of him:

“I discovered Friday 13 in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was ten years old. And since then I have only thought about this story. When it comes to horror, A24 raises the bar and pushes the boundaries, and I’m excited to explore the Crystal Lake camps under their banner.”

But as if the project was cursed, this series ultimately experienced numerous twists and turns which slowed down its production and brought it to a complete halt. In a survey conducted by The Wrapwe learn that the project was colossal: a budget of $85 million, several seasons planned, and renowned talents involved.

After Betsy Palmer in the 1980 film and Nana Visitor in the 2009 remake, it was planned to be Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) who lends her features to Maman Voorhees. After playing a very real serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, in Monster, – a role which earned her the Oscar, the Golden Globes and the Silver Bear for best actress – she would have rediscovered a taste for murder in fiction. Unrecognizable and brilliant in Patty Jenkins’ film, there is no doubt that she would have surprised us all as Pamela Voorhees.

On the side of the screenwriters of Crystal LakeKevin Williamson (known for the saga Scream by Wes Craven) was to write one of the greatest episodes of the series presented in the file of The Wrap as an equivalent of Purple Wedding – one of the striking and bloody episodes of Game Of Thrones.

The writers’ strike that hit Hollywood last year and conflicts between showrunners and studios over budget put the series on hold. Fuller was fired a few months before filming. According to an anonymous source mentioned in the article: “I think everyone around Bryan and Jim was doing what was necessary to make this series. A24 had the impression that they were planning to never make it.”

However, Crystal Lake would not be completely abandoned. An informant close to A24 told the American media: “We believe in this show. And we’re going to make it.” It remains to be seen with who, when, and how.
