Chris Pine says he's 'stunned' by Wonder Woman 3 cancellation

After the decision of the Warner studio not to continue the Wonder Woman franchise, Gal Gadot's on-screen partner is stepping up to the plate.

Since James Gunn – currently filming a new Superman – and Peter Safran took over the DC studios, the superheroic agenda was somewhat turned upside down. The reason ? The new bosses intend to assert their vision of the DC Universe, which requires some sacrifices.

While Gal Gadot had announced a sequel to Wonder Woman 1984released in 2020, Gunn and Safran denied this information, arguing that “Nothing was ever promised to Gal Gadot regarding Wonder Woman 3”.

DC Studios denies Gal Gadot: no Wonder Woman 3 in sight

A turnaround that does not seem to please everyone. Among the dissatisfied: Chris Pine, the interpreter of Steve Trevor, the boyfriend of Gal Gadot's character. Asked about this by Business Insiderthe actor also known for A Princess Wedding, Into the Woods and the wise Star Trek states:

“I'm stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to change course. I don't know what the reasoning is behind that decision; it's beyond belief. my skills, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character. Patty (Jenkins) is such a thoughtful director.”

Moreover, she is the director and screenwriter of Monster and Wonder Womanwho convinced him to accept the role of Steve Trevor.

“I had no desire to play the boyfriend, and it seemed like a supporting rolehe says. Then, while talking with Patty, she said to me: 'Forget the superhero side, it's a romance, it's Casablancathat's the film I want to make'. I said to myself : 'Oh, that's really cool'. Because when have we seen a superhero movie that is ultimately a love story? It had nothing to do with blowing stuff up.”

A relationship which justifies the loyalty without ulterior motive of Chris Pine (since then, Patty Jenkins has also produced Poolman, the first film directed by Chris Pine, still unreleased in France). Warning, spoilers!

Because Chris Pine's opinion is objective, and has nothing to do with the probable prospect of losing his role, for the simple reason that his character, Steve, is dead in the franchise. When asked if he could reprise his character if it turned out that James Gunne and Peter Safran changed their minds, the forty-three-year-old actor replied: “Me? No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back”.

This decision by DC Studios therefore does not impact Chris Pine's career plans. For Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins, at the heart of the franchise, it's a different story.
