Chris Rock set to direct Martin Luther King biopic produced by Spielberg

The adaptation of a book which refers to the United States, King: A Life.

He’s trying to stop being the Oscar slap man. Chris Rock could well succeed in relaunching his career by making a perfectly Oscar-worthy biopic, on the life of Martin Luther King Jr..

The actor is in advanced discussions according to Deadline, to bring the book to the screen King: A Lifea biography written by Jonathan Eig and published in May 2023, which is already a reference in the field.

King: A Life has been hailed as a definitive biography of the civil rights icon, for its use of previously untapped sources that include recently declassified information from the FBI. The book describes the courageous man who demanded peaceful protests in the segregated South, while grappling with his own weaknesses and a federal government that haunted his every step instead of treating him as a hero of history.

Steven Spielberg will serve as executive producer of the film, while Kristie Macosko Krieger will serve as producer.

Chris Rock had made his directorial debut in 2003 with Big StateEdit, in which he stars alongside Bernie Mac. He hasn’t directed anything since. Top Five in 2014.

It remains to be seen who would step into Dr. King’s shoes. Nothing says that Chris Rock will play the famous pastor himself. One thing is certain: it certainly won’t be Will Smith!
