Cliffhanger 2 in CGI? “I hope they don’t film everything on a green screen!”

Director of the 1993 film, Renny Harlin calls for “the sequel to respect the original.”

Cult director of action films from the 1990s, Renny Harlin notably directed Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger, in 1993. He will not return for the recently announced sequel. But he has a message to convey to his successor: limit digital effects as much as possible!

In an interview with ComingSoon, Harlin first revealed that he himself attempted to make Cliffhanger 2 for years : “To be honest, I’ve been trying for decades. I always thought the movie was a huge success and it was crazy that there wasn’t a sequel. There were other stories to tell…”

But the rest will be done without him. SO “I have no idea what kind of story they are planning to tell or what role Sly will have in it“, said Renny Harlin. “But I wish them good luck and above all, I hope they don’t try to replace what we did with digital effects. I hope they don’t film everything on a green screen! We had done everything for real and the public saw it clearly. We filmed on peaks in the Italian Alps at 3500 meters above sea level. Everything was true, like the opening sequence with the girl falling. This was done for real. We filmed this at 2500 meters, suspended from a cable!

And Renny Harlin to denounce the current practices of Hollywood studios, which tend to all digitize to avoid risks: “It’s so easy for studios to say now: We’re going to do everything in front of a green screen and create everything digitally… I hope they don’t do that because Cliffhanger deserves a sequel with the same spirit as the original .”

Directed by French Jean-François Richet and produced by Ric Roman Waugh, the filming of Cliffhanger 2 would be planned for summer 2024, in Europe, with Mark Bianculli (The Good Neighbor) responsible for writing the script.

In this sequel, we would find the character of Gabe (Stallone) responsible for an editing lodge. A peaceful retreat suddenly interrupted when the mountaineer finds himself and his clients taken hostage by kidnappers. It’s his daughter who will come to the rescue using her climbing skills…

Released in 2025 in cinemas.
