Conann: Bertrand Mandico revisits the female Barbarian (teaser)
After After Blue, the filmmaker returns with a new psychedelic UFO presented at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes.
Conann is the title of the next feature film by Bertrand Mandicodirector of Wild Boys (2017) andAfter Blue (Dirty Paradise) (2021). He reworks the myth of Conan the Barbarianwho became famous in the cinema thanks to the eponymous film by John Milius with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role. Here, no testosterone and protruding muscles, Conann is a woman and her entire myth is rewritten from a female point of view with a cast mainly made up of actresses.
The very enigmatic teaser reveals some fragments of the filmmaker’s unique visual universe. In these previous films, Mandico did not hesitate to highlight the artificial aspect of his settings, favoring a baroque universe, excessively stylized and sometimes bordering on abstraction. The director’s favorite actress, Elina Lowensohnis showing in Conann in the role of the narrator of the story. Conann’s adventure will be told at different stages of his life, from childhood to adulthood. Mandico explodes the framework of heroic fantasy by introducing contemporary elements contrary to the medieval logic of the character. We see in particular a silver car and a character using an assault rifle. Conann will be released in theaters on November 29, 2023.
