Death of Alain Dorval at 77: Sylvester Stallone loses his French voice

The actor, famous for his work in dubbing, was also the father of Minister Aurore Bergé.

“The bad news keeps coming…

The world of French dubbing is losing one of its big names: the actor Alain Dorval, known for lending his voice to Sylvester Stallone since 1977 as well as Pat Hibulaire at Disney, has died at the age of 77.”

It is through this tweet that the account FR dubbing announced the sad news, a few hours after the disappearance of another famous French voice, the actress Danièle Hazan (known in particular for the role of Titeuf’s mother).

Alain Dorval was one of the most recognizable voices in French cinema, regularly dubbing Sylvester Stallone since the release of Rocky in 1977 (several months after its broadcast in the United States), but also by Nick Nolte, 48 hours (1982) to Blackout (2022).

Denouncing the deterioration of working conditions in French dubbing during the 1980s, he sometimes “lost” Stallone’s voice on a handful of films, with Warner Bros for example calling on Michel Vigné or Richard Darbois to replace him. But he still personally dubbed the actor regularly during his career, on the Rocky and the Ramboof course, but also in Cobra, Judge Dredd, Taxi 3 Or The Expendables. Very recently, he dubbed it again in the Paramount+ series, Tulsa King.

Also a theater actor, he had notably played in Twelfth Night And Golden head in the 1970s. In the cinema, we could see him in supporting roles, for example in Christs by the thousands Or The Man of Desirealso during this decade.

But it was through his voice that he left his mark. Because in addition to Sly’s successful films, he dubbed Pat Hibulaire in the 90’s Disney cartoons, Tiger in FievelLex Luthor in the series Superman or Le Teigneux in Once upon a time… life/space. At the heart of the 2000s, he also inherited the metallic stamp of Racthet, one of the robots of transformersand Victor in the animated series Ratchet and Clank, taken from the famous video game. An area in which he has also worked, sometimes to find the voice of Pat Hibulaire, as in 2012 on the game Epic Mickey or for the character of John Rambo, integrated into the intrigues of Mortal Kombat 11 And Call of Duty: War Zone. He could also be heard on Skyrock and ADO radios.

In a relationship with the actress Dominique Dumont, and whose real name is Alain Bergé, he is the father of Minister Aurore Bergé, currently in charge of Equality between women and men and the fight against discrimination. Affected by cancer, he died this Tuesday, February 13 in Villejuif.
