Denis Villeneuve will only make Dune 3 “if it is better than the second part”

Some members of the cast are already ready to sign, but Denis Villeneuve wants to take a step back before starting a third production.

Denis Villeneuve recently committed to honoring a third part of Dune, if and only if this sequel is better than the second opus. The third film should be based on the novel Dune Messiah of Frank Herbert. This statement could not be more Dantesque when we know that Dune: Part Two caused a sensation both among critics and the public. The interstellar epic has crossed the $500 million mark at the global box office – and it’s not over yet!

“I made both films one after the other, which makes perfect sense to me, the director recently told the magazine Empire, I felt it was a good idea to move forward immediately after the first part. We were already designing and writing and so on, but that also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it will be healthy to take a step back. First of all, you have to make sure you have a solid storyline. What I want to avoid is not being ready. I've never done it, and now I think it might be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all ideas are on paper.“

The director of Prisoners, has long expressed interest in making a third film Dune. Before the opening of Dune: Part Twothe filmmaker told fans he was close to completing a script based on Dune Messiah. He also told the press that he was convinced that the second part was better than the first part, so perhaps a third installment will be no exception and will raise the bar even higher.
