Disney plans to return to 2D for its future projects

“I think it’s obvious,” says Chris Buck, co-director of Frozen.

Chris Buck (Tarzan, Snow Queen), co-director of Wish: Asha and the Good Star revealed that Disney was not ruling out the possibility of returning to its first love, 2D. The last 2D projects date back to more than 12 years ago, with Winnie the Pooh (2011) and The princess and the Frog (2009).

Even though the Disney studio has abandoned hand-drawn projects since 2013, Chris Buck expressed that a return to 2D was entirely possible for the studio in future projects. For the celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary, the film wish appears as a decisive anchor point – this is why the design of the animation was not completely clear-cut, particularly concerning the key character of wish : Star, Asha’s lucky star.

“I think it’s obvious. This film is inspired by Disney’s heritage and its 2D animation. The rendering is somewhat similar to 2D for certain characters. We had done preliminary 2D tests for Star. We Let’s continue to explore the avenues.”

Winnie the Pooh censored for being a hermaphrodite, sexually “ambiguous” and half-naked

Chris Buck confided that the animation of wish was constantly evolving during its conception.

The good thing is that we started with short films, there were Paperman, Feast And Far From the Tree. They explored the style that we have adapted and continue to evolve over time. So it’s a challenge. We just don’t know what’s next.

Tianaanimated series Disney+ produced by Joyce Sherri (screenwriter of Midnight Oaths), which will be the continuation of The princess and the Frog, could be an opportunity to return to 2D to remain faithful to the feature film. But nothing has yet been officially announced in this regard.

Wish: Asha and the Good Star will be released in theaters on November 29, 2023.
