Dragons: The friendship between Toothless and Hiccup in three cute scenes

The dragon/viking duo returns to TV this evening in The Hidden World, and they are as cute as ever.

On the occasion of the release of the last part of the trilogy Dragonsby Dean DeBlois, in early 2019 at the cinema, First returned to the best scenes of Toothless (Toothless in French) and his human friend Harold. We are sharing this article again on the occasion of the rebroadcast of the animated film, this evening on M6. Note that it has recently been adapted live action.

The whole story of Dragons is based on the friendship between the young viking Harold and the Night Fury, a sort of big black cat who acts like a faithful doggie: both majestic, playful and always on the lookout, he supports the little hero in his adventures, helping him to open up to the world and take responsibility. Since 2010, they have evolved together, supporting each other in their trials and having fun with complicity in moments of joy. A beautiful lesson in friendship that can be summarized in three cult scenes.

Hiccup and Toothless become tamed in Dragons (2010)
First fascinated by Toothless, the son of the village chief of Berk is also afraid of him, aware of the power of the young dragon and having above all grown up with the idea that these creatures were dangerous and that they had to be killed to prove his viking value. However, he manages to tame him little by little, by offering him food, and above all by showing him that he does not wish him harm despite their difficult beginnings: at the beginning of the story, Harold injured Toothless and he will pass then part of the saga “fix”, his own wound then echoing that of his friend. Step by step, their relationship is built on trust, listening and understanding each other, and this is undoubtedly what makes them one of the most endearing duos in cinema. “- What does it mean to tame? – It means to create bonds“, The Little Prince learned from the fox. These links have held strong for almost ten years and have made it possible to build a beautiful trilogy, coherent from start to finish because it never loses sight of its two main characters.

Dragons 3: Seventh Heaven (Review)

Hiccup and Toothless take flight in Dragons 2 (2014)

Well, we’re cheating a little because the two friends obviously didn’t wait Dragons 2 to fly off towards adventure, but if we chose a scene from this sequel, it is because it was much more impressive in this type of sequence: by spacing out each section, Dean DeBlois and his animators take advantage fully technical developments which make it possible to offer the public increasingly beautiful films. A good part of the promotion of No. 2 thus revolved around this idea of “wrinkled”, the flight scenes being each more spectacular than the other. From the start of the film, the duo took on a totally stunning race towards the ocean, the viking being able to race with his winged friend thanks to a sort of “wingsuit” of his invention. And it’s even more impressive in issue 3, where the fights are choreographed to perfection, and where digital animation has taken another step forward.

Choosing this scene where Hiccup and Toothless twirl above the waves also highlights the importance of the theme of freedom within this saga: the boy spent the entire first episode detaching himself from the beliefs of his people and managed to become a hero in his own way, respecting the dragons. A freedom that he would not have been able to discover without Toothless, and that he can fully experience when he flies on his back or alongside him. This extract also immediately shows their sometimes mocking complicity, and their confidence, above all: they can throw themselves into the void, as long as the other is there to catch them.

Toothless follows Hiccup’s advice to seduce the Lightning Fury in Dragons 3 (2019)

One might believe that this sequence where Toothless multiplies the ridiculously funny dances and grimaces to flirt with his fellow creature has no reason to appear in an analysis of the best scenes between the dragon and his friend the viking, since it is here a question of emancipation . Yet when Toothless falls under the spell of the Lightning Fury, it is his human friend who will help him conquer her. Himself madly in love with Astrid, he understands him, pushes him to join her, and even tries to advise him by mimicking a gesture of “alpha male” with the most beautiful effect… or not! Because if the young man is full of good will towards his dragon, he always seems so clumsy when it comes to love, and despite himself transmits this character trait to him. Yet it works: Toothless has rarely been as charming as when he makes a fool of himself to seduce his girlfriend.

We won’t spoil the ending for you here. Dragons 3but the friendship between Toothless and Hiccup remains at the heart of the final film in the trilogy. Here is its trailer:
