Dune 2 wakes up the box office after months of coma

Denis Villeneuve's film has had a big start in the United States and around the world.

Dune 2 successfully launched. As expected, the sequel to the adventures of Paul Atreides won over the American public, with 81.5 million in revenue at the US box office for its first weekend. Or double the first film, released in 2021 in cinemas and simultaneously on HBO Max. This is the best start to the careers of Timothée Chalamet and Denis Villeneuve. Hollywood hadn't seen this since October and the Taylor Swift concert film which raised 93 million greenbacks.

This great start is also confirmed internationally. With 97 million dollars in the rest of the world, Dune: second party has already raised 178 million overall. A great score for a film that cost 190 million to produce, plus 100 million in marketing costs. Supported by rave reviews and very positively received by the public, it should logically pay off in the coming weeks. Dune 3 will see the light of day, there is little doubt about it.

It won't be enough to save cinema, but it will do the industry a lot of good. Since the start of 2024, the box office has been at half mast in the United States. Argyle and and Madame Web flopped severely and Dune 2 was expected like the Messiah to bring the audience into the theater. Behind, the biopic on Bob Marley, which was the pleasant surprise of February, is already in line with 7 million receipts in the third week.

In 3rd place, we find Ordinary Angelswith Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson ($3.8 million), followed by Madame Web, which grossed 3.2 million and has only accumulated 40 million since its release. The top 5 is completed by… a tv series on the life of Jesus, The Chosen. Proof that there is indeed a problem with American cinema and that Hollywood will have to react quickly.
