Fantastic Beasts at a standstill: “No one told us there would be 5 films”

The director of the saga, David Yates, speaks of a “break” but admits to not having discussed a next film with anyone at the moment.

The wands are not about to wave again. The world of Harry Potter at the cinema is on standby, since the small flop of Dumbledore’s Secrets (in 2022). David Yatesthe director of the trilogy dedicated to Norbert Scamander, admits in a new interview with Total Film magazine that his franchise is currently at a standstill:

“With Fantastic Beasts, we are at a standstill today. We made these three films, the last one during a pandemic, and it was extremely fun to make. But it was difficult, since we were filming when there was no vaccine yet. Fortunately, no one got sick, because we had very special protocols in place. In short, we are all very proud of the Dumbledore’s Secrets and after it came out into the world, we just needed to stop, take a break and take it easy.”

Implied, it’s a creative break for the saga, not an industrial one. That said, David Yates, who directed and wrote the three films, does not know if she will ever resume, because no one has ever talked to her about making 5 films, as was mentioned by the Warner Bros. studio. :

“The idea that there would be five films was a surprise to most of us. JK Rowling spoke about it spontaneously, once at a press screening. No one told us there would be would have five, when we were hired to do the first…”

In this confusion, David Yates still suggests that we must be optimistic, even if the announcement of the series Harry Potter for Max risks vampirizing the franchise in the coming years: “I’m sure at some point we’ll come back. But no, I haven’t spoken to JK Rowling about the sequel yet. I haven’t spoken with (producer) David Heyman, I haven’t talked with Warner Bros. We’re just taking a break. It’s pretty nice. It allows me to do other things…” smiles the filmmaker who is releasing a Netflix film, Pain merchantsthis week on the platform… far from wizards.
