Flow, the cat who was no longer afraid of water, sails towards new horizons (trailer)

The second film by Gints Zilbalodis, multi-awarded at the Annecy Festival, will be released in theaters on October 30.

“A cat wakes up in a universe invaded by water where all human life seems to have disappeared. He finds refuge on a boat with a group of other animals. But getting along with them proves to be an even bigger challenge than overcoming your fear of water! Everyone will now have to learn to overcome their differences and adapt to the new world that is imposed on them.”

In (literally) inhuman silence, a boat, led by a bird, advances into the bowels of a submerged city. As a figurehead, a black cat, Flow, observes the dilapidated landscape. A refined, simple trailer, but which nevertheless says everything about the poetry of the latest film by Gints Zilbalodis, Flow, the cat who was no longer afraid of water.

In 2019, the first feature by this young director from Latvia, Elsewhere, won the Contrechamp Prize at the Annecy Animated Film Festival. Perhaps announcing Flowthis film told the epic tale of a young man through a silent universe, where his only companions are the animals he meets on his way, and of course, this agonizing shadow that pursues him.

This year, Zilbalodis received not one, but four awards for Flow : the Jury Prize, the Audience Prize, the Gan Foundation Broadcast Prize and the Best Original Music Prize in the feature film category. Before that, the film had already distinguished itself by being presented in the Un Certain Regard selection at Cannes and had even been spotted by Guillermo del Toro, who had reposted the trailer on “future of animation”.

Because it is true that this production, coming from Belgium, France and Latvia, demonstrates a very particular animation technique, which has the effect of provoking “a visual and tearful shock” according to the review of Firstwhich further specifies that Flow East “an adventure as minimalist (no dialogue, the refined features of the animals) as it is massive (the gigantic settings and a mind-blowing sense of setting”.
