“That’s not why I became an actress. These films don’t change my life.”

There has been a lot of talk this year about “tired superheroes”, of the public’s weariness with too many comic book adaptations. This subject is debated in Hollywood, and this week, one of its leading actresses reacted to the question: Jodie Foster.

“It’s a phase, she considers in She, who met her to talk aboutUnsinkable, by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, watch on Netflix. “A phase that lasted a little too long for me, but it’s a phase and I’ve seen so many in my career. I hope people get tired of it soon. There are some good ones, as Iron Man, Black Panther Or Matrix, I like to be entertained by these films, I let myself be amazed by them, but that’s not why I became an actress. These films don’t change my life.”

Note that Matrix is not strictly speaking a superhero film, in the sense that it is not an adaptation of Marvel or DC comics, but it shares several points in common with them: a substantial budget, heroes with of powers, a world to save…

Revealed as a child (notably thanks to Martin Scorsese in Alice is no longer here And Taxi Driver), Jodie Foster became extremely popular thanks to the Silence of the Lambsby Jonathan Demme, and has always surrounded himself with great directors: Robert Zemeckis for ContactDavid Fincher for Panic RoomSpike Lee for Inside Man

She also directed a handful of films that were close to her heart, from Little manin 1991, at Money Monsterin 2016. She will soon return to the series True Detectivefor a 4th season taking place in the freezing cold of Alaska.

In fifty years of career, Jodie Foster explains that she has chosen her projects according to her personal life, and not the other way around. She also advises the younger generation to trust themselves and not focus on big franchises at all costs to succeed.

“It’s ok to sacrifice myself to a certain degree for success or to get the life I want, she considers. But the important thing is to believe in your talent. You can very well disappear for two years, live your life, and then come back. There will always be work for you. Okay, maybe it won’t be in a franchise, but who cares, right? What matters is your life.”
