The Marvels: the shortest MCU film is far from the best (review)

For the first time since 2015, Disney is not the biggest Hollywood studio

It was Universal who won the box office battle in 2023.

The centenary year will not have been the one Disney hoped. The big-eared studio has had mixed results for many of its blockbusters. So much so that Universal Pictures passed him by!

Thanks to Super Mario, Oppenheimer And M3GAN among others, the Comcast-owned company ranked as the most profitable studio at the 2023 box office. In detail, Universal earned $4.907 billion in revenue worldwide and takes the number 1 spot in the box office in Hollywood, for the first time since 2015 (boosted at the time by Jurassic world, Fast & furious 7 And Minions).

It is therefore also a first for Disney in 7 years: the giant is not the world box office leader in 2023, and slips to second place, despite 17 new films and some huge productions like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny Or The little Mermaid. The difference is not crazy, because the century-old studio still gleaned $4.827 billion at the worldwide box office, by programming 7 fewer films (!) than Universal in theaters this year. But the symbol is there.

And for the first time in a long time, Disney is not even on the annual podium, dominated by barbie (Warner Bros.), Super Mario And Oppenheimer (Universal). It’s also the first time since 2014 (excluding the pandemic-hit 2020 and 2021) that none of Disney’s films have surpassed the $1 billion mark. The fault of spectacularly underperforming MarvelAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has The Marvels.

That being said, even if Universal is exceptionally ahead this year, Disney is keeping its distance from the competition. Despite barbie, Warner Bros. ended 2023 in third place with $3.84 billion globally.

We do not yet know Sony’s exact results (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse And Napoleon) and Paramount (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One), but according to Variety, they will complete the Top 5 with $2 billion each at the box office.
