Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024?

The director teases the release in “a few months” of his self-produced $120 million film: “Be Patient.”

Filming ended at the end of March 2023, and since then there has been little or no news from Megalopolis. Very active on Instagram, since joining the social network last May, Francis Ford Coppola has still not shared any official image of his film, neither poster nor teaser. Nothing to eat, apart from a few photos taken on the set where we see in particular Shia Labeouf in Greek goddess style drag queen.

Megalopolis is expected in theaters in 2024, but no release date has yet been announced. However, Coppola reassured the public, confirming on the Accutron Podcast that the feature film that he financed himself to the tune of $120 million by selling his vineyards would see the light of day this year. “Just a few more months and it will be out. All I can say is that I love the actors in it. It’s unusual, and never boring. Other than that, be patient“.

THE “some months” mentioned by the 83-year-old filmmaker could indicate that the film will arrive in cinemas during the first half of 2024. Or that it will first be presented during a small Festival which is held each year in May on the Côte d’Azur? It’s only speculation for the moment, but Coppola’s big return, with a project with a five-star cast (Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Forrest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight , Shia LaBeaouf, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman) would clearly have a place in Cannes.

The stars of the film, in any case, are not in a hurry to fuel the growing buzz around Megalopolis. Adam Driver recently paid tribute to Coppola and the investment he made to finally give birth to this film he began writing in the 1980s:

Because he financed it himself, it made the filming process one of the best, if not the best filming experiences of my life (…) It was like he was totally directing the film he wanted to make and that’s it. We said to ourselves: ‘Oh, that’s how movies should be.’ And he is the most generous and philosophical person I know. I loved this process and doing it with him. I love talking to him.” .

Megalopolis looks like a disproportionate work, but its pitch is quite simple: “The fate of Rome haunts the modern world, incapable of solving its own social problems, in this epic work of political ambition, genius and dangerous love.” Bouncing on a TikTok trend, Coppola recently confided that he thinks a lot about the Roman Empire (“This is the inspiration for my new film“). But it also presents Megalopolis as a message of hope, for which he has great ambitions.

What would really make me happy? Not to win a bunch of Oscars, because I already have a bunch, probably more than I deserve. It’s not about making a lot of money either, although I think in time this film will break even, because everyone who rewatches to find new things in it, they end up making money. ‘money”he declared last April.

“So come to think of it, long after I’m dead, all I would like is for people to continue to discuss Megalopolis, let them ask themselves: is the society in which we live the only one possible? Or can we make it better? Education, mental health… What this film offers is the idea that utopia is not a place. This is how we can make the world a better place.
