French box office 2024 so far: the 10 biggest hits

Attendance at movie theaters has finally recovered, thanks to an exceptional month of June, boosted by Un p’tit truc en plus and Vice Versa 2.

84.64 million. This is the number of cinema tickets that were sold in France between January and June 2024. A decrease in cinema attendance over one year of around 7%, since 91 million tickets were sold over the same period, in 2023.

So was the first half a failure? Yes and no. First, it was catastrophic. The first four months saw spectators shunning cinemas, with only Dune 2 And Kung Fu Panda 4 to excite the crowds. Result: horrible attendance that fell by up to -35% in April (compared to April 2023). But the end of spring was much more enjoyable.

Certainly helped by rotten weather, cinemas in France were full in May (+13.6% over one year) and especially in June, with 13.18 million admissions, an increase of 28.9% compared to June 2023. Quite simply the best month of June since 2013 (13.81 million) according to the CNC.

The success of the Fête du Cinéma, which began on June 30 and ends this Wednesday, July 3, seems to indicate that attendance will remain high in the coming weeks, thanks to the Monte Cristo by Pierre Niney and At Inside Out 2 Pixar in particular, while waiting for the release of the summer holiday hits: Despicable Me 4, Deadpool & Woverine, Largo Winch 3 and other Alien: Romulus.

In detail, 13 films passed the million admissions mark in our country during the first half of the year, including 4 French films, even if statistically, French films take the lion’s share, with 46.4% market share compared to 31.9% for American films. The phenomenon A little something extra has clearly been running at full speed.
