Furiosa stalls at the US box office

The latest Mad Max finds itself neck and neck with the cat Garfield.

The buzz on the Croisette has obviously not reached the ears of Americans. Despite very good feedback during its preview event at the Cannes Film Festival, Furiosa failed to launch the machine at the US box office. The last opus of the saga Mad Max Although he took the number 1 spot, he made do with $25 million in revenue in North America (and $60 million worldwide). To compare, Fury Road had collected more than 45 million dollars upon its launch in 2015 across the Atlantic (to end its career at 380 million dollars in revenue).

The start of Furiosa therefore has cause for concern, especially since it is a long weekend in USA, with Memorial Day holiday this Monday. According to estimates from the American press, Furiosa expected to finish at $31 million between Friday and Monday… tied with Garfield.

The new animated film Garfield: Hero in spite of himself, dedicated to the origins of the famous comic book cat, should also end this 4-day weekend with $31 million at the US box office. For once, an unexpected success, given the negative reviews. It will be released in France on July 31.

Behind the two leaders, we find the comedy of John Krasinski, Blue and companywhich has had a solid second week and is approaching $60 million at the US box office and is slowly passing the $100 million mark worldwide.

Finally, we note that Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom continues to fall. For its third week, the blockbuster fell to 4th place in the US box office, and has already only garnered an additional 13 million, for a total of 122 million in North American theaters. The film should still be a nice little success for Disney and 20th Century Studios, since it is at $300 million in total revenue.
