Greta Gerwig deciphers Barbie's final line

“I wanted the film to end with a sort of 'mic drop', an ultimate joke, but at the same time, I find this ending very moving.”

Updated March 16, 2024: barbie will be rebroadcast this evening on Canal +. You saw him ? So let's talk a little about his final scene…

News of July 25, 2023: Now that barbie was released, and the film was a hit in theaters, its director and co-writer Greta Gerwig is questioned in detail about several elements of its plot. After having deciphered a nice dialogue between her heroine played by Margot Robbie and an elderly woman played by costume designer Ann Roth, she returns to her very last line. Beware of spoilers : the following article therefore details the very end of barbie.

Greta Gerwig: “Ken is nothing without Barbie, he's a hilarious and tragic figure”

Following her meeting with Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler (played by Rhea Perlman), Barbie decides to become a real woman and explore the real world. Her first meeting thus has a very particular meaning: while the public thinks that she is accompanied by Gloria (America Ferrera) to her first job interview, it turns out in fact that she has an appointment at her gynecologist. An important element in a woman's life, which she will discover under the assumed name of Barbara Handler, that of the real daughter of the co-creator of Barbie.

“On this project, it seemed important to me that everything had at least a double reading level, she explains to USAToday. I wanted the film to end with some kind of 'mic drop', an ultimate joke, but at the same time, I find this ending very moving. When I was a teenager, I remember growing up feeling ashamed of my body, in a way that's hard to describe. I felt like it had to be hidden. So showing Margot as Barbie at the end of the film, with this gigantic smile on her face, who says that she has an appointment with her gynecologist with so much joy, was a way of telling young people: 'Barbie's going too, girls'. In a way that is both funny and touching. There's so much of that style in the film. I always made sure he had a heart.”
