Mathieu Turi adds a dose of nightmares to the working conditions of miners. Plus a nice cast.

Originally known for his role as assistant director for Inglourious Basterds by Quentin Tarantino and Lucy by Luc Besson, Matthew Turi takes over the helm of French horror cinema. Director of the post-apocalyptic thriller Hostiles (2017), Mathieu Turi already proposed in 2020 the theme of claustrophobia in Meander.

For his new film Miners, the filmmaker appropriates the heritage of Northern France and its coal mines. Often coveted as a film set (especially for Germinal), working in the mine revives all the arduousness of this descent into hell. The air is unbreathable, the light only appears in furtive beams created by the headlamps, the faces are stained with charcoal; the staging almost naturally projects a horror film atmosphere.

This project was filmed at the Bruay-La-Bruissière mining museum, and at first glance, the threat of firedamp would not be the most palpable. In the same spirit as Catacombs by John Erick Dowdle and The Descent by Neil Marshall, we discover in the trailer that an underground presence has been awakened by the miners! An idea already present in the first teaser effective in the film, and even better shown here.

In the casting of this anxiety-provoking production? Amir El Kacem (Abdel and the Countess by Isabelle Doval) and Samuel Le Bihan (The Pact of the Wolves by Christophe Gans), but also Thomas Solivérès (Edmond), Jean-Hugues Anglade (The Great Bath), Philippe Torreton (Simone, the trip of the century), Marc Riso (recently seen in the series Funny), Bruno Sanches (appreciated in the series HPI) and the Spaniard Diego Martin.

Miners will be released in theaters on November 15.
