Potiche or the revenge of Catherine Deneuve (review)

Long before PoticheCatherine Deneuve was proud to play feminist roles, notably in The Last Metro (1980) François Truffautas explained in the documentary dedicated to the actress, Catherine Deneuve, in her image.

“In The Last Metro I have a company name. Responsible roles aren’t particularly rare for me, they’re rare in general for women.”testifies Catherine Deneuve.

Three things to know about… The Last Metro

The documentary highlights the testimonies of directors who had the opportunity to collaborate with the actress: André Téchiné, Agnes Varda, François Truffaut, Nicole Garcia or even the costume designer Catherine Leterrier. On the occasion of this tribute, old interviews with the actress resurface. Catherine Deneuve’s voice resonates and adorns the filming photographs from her rich filmography.

The archive images project the evolution of the actress and her hazardous beginnings in the world of cinema.

“At that age, nothing really attracted me, I dreamed a lot, she remembers. I didn’t talk that much. I had no desire or real passion.”

Against all expectations, the young actress’ physique was not always an advantage in her early days, as Agnès Varda explains with great honesty: “She had bangs that bulged down to the middle of her eyes, it was huge, we couldn’t see it anymore. She was ugly, frankly. So, I took a brush and then I cleared this extraordinary face that she has.”

Over the decades, Catherine Deneuve has been able to develop her acting skills, although she has no training dedicated to the profession.

ʺShe is not someone who has theatrical training, she is absolutely destined for cinema, this is captured in the present of the shot”, testifies “cinema brother” André Téchiné with whom she worked in Hotel of the Americas with the immense Patrick Dewaere.

Catherine Deneuve discusses her approach and her relationship to cinema. The decor and the costumes seem to be the source of impregnation for the actress, who at the time of filming melts into the skin of her character.

“Me, I’m more in the intensity of the situation when we’re filming. For me, that’s what cinema is”explained Catherine Deneuve during an interview.
