Henry Cavill as the new Highlander: the remake is confirmed

A big-budget film is being prepared to relaunch the franchise on the big and small screens.

There can only be one left… Henry Cavill will he be the one? Nothing is less certain, but Highlander will be reborn from its ashes, for a new opus carried by the former Superman and the hero emerging from The Witcher.

According to Deadline, the remake project is confirmed and Lionsgate is looking for partners to produce and distribute this new version signed Chad Stahelskiknown for directing all four films in the franchise John Wick.

The Deadline article states that the film will be a “big budget proposal” which will cost more than $100 million. The film is reportedly eyeing a 2024 production start date.

This new Highlander will not be quitet a pure remake nor a sequel, but a sort of spin-off. Stahelski spoke this summer of a prequel which “would leave room to develop the license subsequently”, hoping that this Highlander made in Cavill could lead to sequels or even spin-off TV series.

“I just think it’s a rich mythology when you can take any time period, any nationality, any culture, any type of person and make them an immortal who has to fight in duel and face the burden of immortality – it’s so cool!

The universe Highlander was created by Gregory Widen, co-writer of the original 1986 film directed by Russell Mulcahy, starring Christopher Lambert as Connor McLeod. The franchise has already produced 5 films, 2 TV series and a few animated derivatives.
