How the Bayeux Tapestry inspired the new House of the Dragon theme song

Showrunner Ryan Condal reveals the secrets of the superb opening of season 2, which draws its inspiration in part from the famous Norman work.

For 8 seasons, the credits of Game Of Thrones has established itself as one of the most beautiful and original of the small screen. If that of House of the Dragon was clearly inspired by it for season 1, that of season 2 takes another artistic path. The History of Westeros is told to us through weaving and the art of tapestry, in a rather sublime 3-minute opening, which tells us Ryan Condal.

“We said to ourselves that the opening credits of season 1 were very focused on the family tree of Vyseris, his lineage, the generation of Rhaenyra then that of Aegon. Now that this tree is known, we wanted bring a more vivid History to life“, explains to Première the creator and showrunner of House of the Dragon.

Ryan Condal confides at the same time that this idea came to him from his personal love for this medieval art: “I personally love the art of tapestry. I think it’s an incredible way to record history. I’m crazy about the Bayeux Tapestry in France, for example, which dazzles me every time, both as a relic and as a piece of art.”

Obviously, the whole sequence was not carried out on a weaving bench, but on a computer: “We had this generic made by a specialized Californian company. They offered us this opening, which we refined in relation to the story we wanted to tell: the tapestry goes back in time from the days of Ancient Valyria to tell the History of the Targaryen Kings and bring us back to the days present. There are also scenes from season 1, it’s quite amusing. The history of the Targaryens is thus presented as the tapestry is woven. I love this opening. And there are more surprises to come…” concludes Ryan Condal.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon will continue next Monday on Max.
