In a long article which looks back on the origins of the series The Boys, Rolling Stone tells us that sixteen years ago, Adam McKay could have directed three films adapted from the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It all dates back to 2006: Seth Rogen and his producer friend Evan Goldberg, already fans of Garth Ennis’ work, rushed to buy the first issue of the comic. The Boys. “ We said to ourselves: ”Wow, this is completely crazy” “, remembers Rogen. “And the same week we went to Sony to tell them that they should make a film about it. » And Goldberg clarified: “They told us: ”Yes, we should… but with someone else. »
Sony ended up buying the license, but obviously never knew what to do with it for a decade. At one point, director Adam McKay (at the time known for comedies Featured Presenter: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Ricky Bobby: king of the circuit And Brothers in spite of themselves) therefore tried to make a trilogy for the cinema. Rolling Stone even states that the first film was completely written and that animatics of certain scenes had been made. Except that the project never saw the light of day during this pre-MCU era, where studios were cautious about superhero films. “ I wouldn’t change anything that happened », assures designer Darick Robertson. “ Because the series is incredible. But (Adam McKay) did some really cool stuff. It’s just that it was 2008 and not 2018. I don’t think they (the studios) were ready. »
