An uncompromising testimony to the AIDS years and a vibrant ode to life, this series from the creator of Years en Years brings all emotions together.

I looked elsewhere for years. Finally, I can put AIDS at the heart of a fiction“, blurted Russell T. Davies In The Guardian shortly before the French broadcast ofIt's a Sin (on Canal + in spring 2021). Not in an interview, but in a forum with cathartic value.

On the occasion of the unencrypted broadcast of the show, from this evening unencrypted on France 2, as well asin replay, free, on France.TV – and this until October 31, 2024, here is the review of First.

The British screenwriter nevertheless designed the first gay series (Queer as Folk) and paved a fictional route including more representativeness (up to Cucumber, already more radical). Final stage of this journey, It's a Sin develops its story around three young men who left for London to start a new chapter in their lives. However, it is 1981 and the AIDS epidemic is beginning to take its toll.

Imagined as a feverish and energetic choral series which describes the exhilarating conquest of new horizons, It's a Sin confronts immobilized youth with uncertainty and fear of tomorrow, often in the same scene and with astonishing accuracy.

Exalted to the point of sometimes taking on the air of a theatrical performance or a musical comedy, it comes up against this disturbing, parallel rise in tension, which contaminates the plot to the point of fear. Very embodied, the series owes a lot to its male casting who fades away, when the time comes, in front of an unsinkable young woman. Played by Lydia West (Years and Years), she is the companion in difficulty of these heroes of misfortune whom she holds at arm's length. She takes the blows to protect others in a burst of devotion, even in this hospital which reveals a raw reality. Where denial disappears and exposes an unvarnished truth.

About successful series, First is currently in Lille to cover the Séries Mania festival, which is in full swing. Here is the recap of the weekend:
