James Wan explains ‘superhero fatigue’ with the Bee Gees: ‘Of course it makes sense’

For the director of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, “people are more demanding and that’s completely understandable”.

In a week will be released Aquaman and the Lost Kingdomsecond part of the franchise directed by James Wan (Saw, Conjuring, Fast and Furious 7…). This will be the very last film in the DC universe as we have known it since Man of Steel : subsequently, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new bosses of DC Studios, will start from scratch with a new film Superman scheduled for 2025. A somewhat strange period for superhero cinema as a whole, since even Marvel films are struggling today to bring audiences together in theaters… superhero tired (this weariness of spectators towards superheroic films) theorized for around ten years seems to be confirmed.

For James Wan, First recently interviewed, it makes sense: “ Of course it makes sense. I remember seeing a documentary about the Bee Gees, who started the disco trend and made the genre very popular. And then suddenly almost all the music that was coming out was just disco. After a while, people got tired of it. After 10 or 15 years, people want something else and that’s normal. “, he assures.

“Similarly, for a period not so long ago, it was said that horror cinema was no longer popular. What was wrong was just that this is how fashions work: there are times when the genre is very popular, and then it goes down again. And all it takes for it to take off again is one or two good films that bring in the audience. Today’s audiences are much more spoiled, they have tons of superhero movies to choose from. When I was younger, we had the Superman by Richard Donner, Batman by Tim Burton or Punisher with Dolph Lundgren (Laughs.) And that was about it! »

“But now the supply is infinitely greater and people are more demanding. This is completely understandable, and I can hear it getting repetitive. That’s why it’s important, when you’re making a film based on a franchise, to find the unique thing that no one has seen before. »

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in cinemas in France on December 20. Watch the trailer:
