Javier Bardem: “When I see Timothée Chalamet in Dune 2, I see a great actor at work”

“An actor grows all the more quickly when he finds himself on huge film sets facing people like Javier Bardem,” Timothée Chalamet tells us.

In the latest issue of Firstcurrently on newsstands, we are devoting a large file to the release of Dune 2 (February 28 in cinemas). Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya and Austin Butler present us with the most anticipated blockbuster of the year. As well as Timothée Chalamet and Javier Bardemwho gave us a duo interview.

Chalamet, who plays the film’s hero, Paul Atréides, and Javier Bardem, the Fremen Stilgar (and father of Zendaya/Chani) represent two generations of actors. However, they developed a real affinity on the set. And if the 54-year-old Spanish actor is much more experienced, he was nonetheless amazed by the young star, for whom he is full of praise.

Excluded – “Dune 2 is a monster, a much more muscular film”

How old are you again? 28 years ? At that age I was… much more irresponsible than him! (Laughs.) Completely crazy. Sorry, I know that actors tend to throw flowers at each other during promos, but I have to say that Timothée is one of the most amazing actors I’ve ever worked with. He is very intelligent, extremely motivated, and he not only has lots of skills but he knows how to use them.

Seriously, watch him sing and dance in Wonka! When you’re so young and so talented, you can easily get lost. Not Timothy. He knows what he’s doing. When I see him in Dune 2, I see a great actor at work. It is precise. And lightning fast. For a partner, it’s scary: you always have to be on your guard!

Like his character, Timothée Chalamet has matured since the first part of Dunereleased in 2021 but filmed in 2019. Crowned with the success of Wonkaof which he is THE headliner, he now arrives with the status of bankable actor on Dune 2even though he is surrounded by a huge cast.

It’s true that in this new Dune, Paul is much more assured. In two films, we will have seen him go from young man to adult, then accept his destiny as a leader, his status as Muad’Dib. As an actor, I had the rare opportunity to make these films over a long period of time. We shot the first part four years ago, so we inevitably see a form of maturity setting in on the screen.”

I changed between filming the two Dune, it is a fact. And an actor grows all the more quickly when he finds himself on huge film sets opposite people like Javier Bardem or Christopher Walken. Well, my journey hasn’t been as epic as Paul’s, thank goodness!
