Jeffrey Wright Fights Stereotypes in American Fiction (Trailer)

The actor plays a writer in Cord Jefferson’s debut film, which was acclaimed by audiences in Toronto.

American Fiction is the first film of Cord Jefferson and won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Jeffrey Wright (The Batman ; Asteroid City) plays Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, an English teacher whose writing career is struggling to take off. Disgusted to see that his novels are not selling because they are not “black” enough, he decides to write a satirical story under a pseudonym by inventing a deliberately stereotypical character. Thinking of denouncing the system, his satire turns against him when his book is a bestseller and he is forced to play his character ever more to satisfy the media’s enthusiasm.

The trailer immediately prepares us for a satirical comedy about the danger of stereotypes. Placed in the world of publishing, Cord Jefferson seems to enjoy making fun of a certain system of right-thinking.
