John Woo prefers “real cinema” to superhero films

The director of Silent Night has the same opinion as Martin Scorsese.

Interviewed by the New Yorkerthe Hong Kong director John Woo, famous for his spectacular action films, has expressed his opinion regarding superhero films. At the risk of disappointing some of his fans, the filmmaker agrees with Martin Scorsese : “I never liked watching movies with big special effects, or anything adapted from comics. I prefer the films of Martin Scorsesethis kind of cinema”, he replies.

Becoming famous at the end of the 80s and throughout the 90s in Hong Kong, he exported to the United States to offer his know-how, particularly on large franchises like Impossible mission. “I like old-fashioned movies, you know? Real cinema. There aren’t that many films like that anymore today.”, deplores John Woo.

He admits to having loved Comancheriareleased in 2016, written by Taylor Sheridan (the screenwriter of Sicario) and produced by David McKenzie (Outlaw King). The film is a modern western featuring Chris Pine And Ben Foster as brothers committing a series of robberies to save their family farm.

The film tells the story of the revenge of a father who witnesses the murder of his son on New Year’s Eve. He relentlessly hunts down the perpetrators of the crime to make them pay until the last one the following Christmas. Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad) and the rapper Kid Cudi are headlining this action film filmed without any dialogue. For John Wooaction speaks louder than words: “I was excited when I received the script for Silent Night. (…) There is no dialogue throughout the film. I thought it would be good for me because it allows me to use my gifts to tell a story visually.
