Jonathan Nolan still plans to conclude Westworld

“We would very much like to finish the story we started.”

Perhaps a glimmer of hope for fans of the hit series Westworld ? While the HBO show suddenly ended in 2022, after 6 years of broadcast, an end to this robotic drama could see the light of day.

In an interview given to the American media The Hollywood Reporterthe co-creator of the series Jonathan Nolan took stock of his recent projects. When the journalist asks Christopher Nolan's little brother if there was any possibility that the ending planned for Westworld can be told in the form of a graphic novel or a film, Jonathan Nolan answers in the affirmative.

Of course, 100%. We are players who don't give up and finish what we start until the end. It took me eight years to Interstellar saw the light of day – and I had to change directors. We would very much like to finish the story we started.

Adapted from a 70s film, it is set in a complex and futuristic world, where science fiction meets the far-western, Westworld has long been considered an ambitious and quality series with a well-crafted storyline, sumptuous images and almost philosophical reflection. With names like Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Tessa Thompson, Jefffrey Wright, and Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris – among others – this HBO series was a hit.

However, despite its numerous awards (9 Emmy Awards for 50 nominations) and its positive reviews, Westworld had to be cut short when two other seasons were planned. According to the studios, the fault is a drop in ratings and a budget that is far too expensive. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, his collaborator and wife, were therefore unable to get to the end of their story.

Actress Evan Rachel Wood, who plays Dolores in the series, also recently spoke about this premature and very frustrating end, and her hope of being able to bring a conclusion: “I think that, one way or another, (…) we will be able to finish it, but I still don't know. I still have insomnia.”

If the return of Westworld is still a hypothesis, Jonathan Nolan found something to bounce back while retaining this bit of western. Recently, he found himself at the helm of the first three episodes of the post-apocalyptic series adapted from the video game of the same name, fallout. The series follows the fate of three surviving characters in this world ravaged by nuclear war. It will be released on April 11 on Prime Video.
