Justine Triet and Martin Scorsese honored at the Santa Barbara Festival

During the Oscars ceremony, the two filmmakers will face each other in 4 categories: Best Editing, Best Actress, Best Direction and Best Film

Martin Scorsese And Justine Triet, two Oscar-nominated filmmakers, were recognized with Outstanding Directors of the Year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. As reported The Hollywood Reporter, the winners expressed their gratitude and discussed the honor of representing their respective latest works. The director ofAnatomy of a fall said : “When I was a young girl, I just recorded a lot of discussions. But now it’s over!” She also mentioned the doubt that her film aroused in the minds of distributors:

“You know, it’s a French film, with a German lead actress, where I ask her to speak in French and English, so they were like ‘Wow…'”

The filmmaker did not fail to mention the completely exceptional performance of Messi, the four-legged interpreter of Snoop, Daniel’s dog (Milo Machado Graner). “I have to admit now that the dog is really, really amazing, but I have to admit something tonight. Laura, her trainer, is truly wonderful.”

Justine Triet could not fail to pay tribute to Martin Scorsesefilmmaker who marked the cinephilia of the new mistress of suspense:

“I want to say a few words about New York New York, I saw it as a teenager, it’s the story of two artists who try to live together and love each other (…) moreover, the scene in the car traumatized me for life, thank you for that.”

After Justine Triet received his prize, Martin Scorsese took the stage, and generated a standing ovation. He reflected on his faithful collaboration with Robert DeNiroand its evolution over the ages:

“At the time, De Niro and I were more of the type to react quickly to events and retaliate. Whereas now we have become more introverted. I guess we’re just old“, joked the filmmaker.

In comparison, Martin Scorsese estimate that Leonardo DiCaprio “is very responsive and really has great energy – it gave me a renewed interest in directing“.

A question arose for the filmmaker about the influence of his work in today’s cinema, he testified: “I can’t really say. I can say that certain angles, certain shots, say, are reminiscent of Goodfellas or Casino, but I cannot tell you precisely that it comes directly from one of my films. If so, sometimes it’s more like an homage, and that’s fun. People point this out to me and say: “Look what they are doing here, it’s a tribute to your shots” (…) For me, it’s an honor.“

As a reminder, Martin Scorsese broke the record for Oscar nominations – he has his 10th nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director.

“People always mention my 10 nominations and the fact that I only won one. I always had the impression that the film Taxi Driver in ’75 was released in ’76, but the film got a nomination (…) I realized that it didn’t matter because, at the end of After all, the real gift was making the films.“
