Keanu Reeves pays tribute to Lance Reddick: ‘People love John Wick because of Charon’

The actor talks about the affection he had for his colleague, who died in March 2023.

On the occasion of the 51st Saturn Awards ceremony, Keanu Reeves agreed to receive the inaugural prize of the Lance Reddick Legacy Award. Lance Reddick is a long-time collaborator and friend of Keanu Reeveswith whom he made the four parts of the action saga John Wick. Lance Reddick sadly passed away at the age of 60 in March 2023, a few days before the release of John Wick 4. His remarks were collected by People Magazine.

“He had such passion and fire for creativity, for his craft and for art. I had the chance to work with him on four films in eight years. Over time, we got to know each other better. But also, he had such grace and he was funny“, entrusts Keanu Reeves in his tribute.

Lance Reddick played the character of Charon, the concierge of the Continental Hotel and valuable ally of John Wick.

The star of Matrix says that one day he wrote a letter to Lance Reddick to tell him how essential his character and his interpretation were to the success of the saga: “I wrote him a letter and said: ‘People like John Wick because Charon likes John Wick.’ Because this character liked John Wick, it made John Wick behave well. And so when I was able to play with him, we had great affection”, he declares.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime project. I think he knew it. I knew it. And we just loved working on this together.”, concludes Keanu Reeves.

As for the future of the franchise, its creator Chad Stahelski will make a remake of Highlander with Henry Cavillbefore producing a fifth chapter of John Wick. However, the spin-off Ballerina is in development with Ana de Armas. Part of this same universe of over-trained killers, it was produced by Len Wiseman and should be released in 2024.
