An intermission in the middle of Killers of the Flower Moon? Rooms defy the ban

Killers of the Flower Moon is coming to Apple TV+, and to France?

Media chronology obliges, we will have to wait to (re)see the latest Scorsese on SVOD.

Killers of the Flower Moon was released in VOD early December in the United States. And it will be available on Apple TV+ from January 12. But in France, it doesn’t happen like that. The last masterpiece of Martin Scorsese having gone through the cinema box, via Paramount Pictures, it is subject to the sacrosanct media timelineadored by some, hated by others.

As an SVOD service, Apple TV+ France must wait 17 months after the theatrical release of a film to offer it in streaming (until 2022 it was 36 months), even though it was produced by Apple Studios. Netflix benefits from a slightly shorter detail (15 months) after signing a specific agreement in exchange for greater investments in French productions. This is not the case for Apple’s platform (Prime Video and Disney+ are in the same situation).

Unless there is a new agreement or rule change between now and then, the schedule is relentless. French Apple TV+ subscribers will have to wait until February 2025 to see or rewatch Killers of the Flower Moon. What about VOD? Here too, the media chronology imposes a longer delay than in other countries such as the United States, where the film has been available for purchase and rental since December 4. It is currently four months, which means that Scorsese’s film, released in cinemas on October 18, 2023, will be on video on demand in France in mid-February. Finally, no information on a French physical release of Killers of the Flower Moon has not been circulated at the moment. In Italy, the Blu-ray will arrive on January 25.

Was Killers of the Flower Moon a flop or a box office success?

These rules may appear frustrating for the public, but it must be remembered that the media chronology, which offers each mode of distribution (theaters, VOD/DVD, pay television, SVOD and free channels) its viewing window, protects the vitality of the cinema in France and creation. A model that we envy (yes, yes) around the world, particularly among our European neighbors.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen it yet Killers of the Flower Moon the best is to head to the few cinemas that still offer it throughout France. With 2,061 cinemas (including 1,264 arthouse cinemas according to the latest CNC report), France remains by far the most cinema-loving country in Europe. And we should be happy about it.
