Lilly Wachowski will make a film again, but this time, no sci-fi

The Matrix co-creator is preparing Trash Mountain, a touching drama with actor Caleb Hearon.

If Lana Wachowski recently staged Matrix Resurrection solo, his sister Lily hasn’t made a film for almost 10 years: Jupiter, the destiny of the universe already dates back to 2015.

Questioned during the summer of 2021 about her long absence from film sets, she justified herself at length, citing very personal reasons.

“That’s a tough question. I had just transitioned, and I was completely exhausted after filming Cloud Atlas, Jupiter: The Fate of the Universe And Sense8, which we had all filmed in succession. We released one while preparing the next one at the same time, and we’re talking about filming lasting more than 100 days each time. I had just undergone a sex change, I was exhausted and my world was falling apart, in a way. My shell was breaking. I needed some time away from the industry.

To reconnect with myself as an artist, I went back to school, did painting and other stuff. When Lana had this idea for the next Matrix, we talked about it, obviously. We began discussing it in the midst of the deaths of our parents, first our father, then our mother, who left within five weeks of each other. There was something about this idea that seemed like a step backwards to me, I had to go back to something I had already done in the past and I wasn’t excited about it. I didn’t want to have made this transition, to have gone through such changes in my life, to be well aware of having lost my parents and to return to something from the past, to find this road that I ‘had already explored. It didn’t satisfy me emotionally. It was like putting on old shoes again, I didn’t want that.”

Lana Wachowski: “There was no question of returning to the Matrix to go back”

Good news for her fans, Lilly Wachowski is preparing to direct a solo film, but without any trace of science fiction on the horizon, this time. She should realize Trash Mountainan intimate drama co-written by Ruby Caster And Caleb Hearon, which will be carried by the latter. We will follow him in the shoes of a young gay man from Chicago returning home to Missouri after the death of his father… to sort things out. The old man being a compulsive hoarder, over the years he had filled his country house with more or less precious objects.

Colliderwho announces the news, presents this scenario as being “at once hilarious, warm and touching, which Lilly Wachowski and Colin Trevorrow immediately embraced the first time they read it.” The director of the last Jurassic World will in fact be one of the producers of this project, via his company Metronom Film Co.

Since the release of Jupiter AscendingLilly Wachowski oversaw two seasons of Work in Progress for Showtime, a series on which she met Caleb Hearon, who is also known for the show Fargo and to write Human Resourcesa spin-off of Big Mouth. She explains that she fell in love with Trash Mountain that it made him want to return to cinema.

“When Caleb Hearon sent me the script, I jumped at the chance to direct it. It’s so beautiful, and sad, and funny at the same time! she says. Stories that take into account queer representation are vital at a time when we are relegated to the status of outsiders. Our writers, Caleb and Ruby, are wonderful. They are two lights in this dark time.”
