M. Night Shyamalan – Trap: “What if The Silence of the Lambs took place at a Taylor Swift concert?” (video)

In place of Anthony Hopkins as the serial killer, we find Josh Hartnett, clearly in his “Reputation era”.

Two months ago, the public discovered the first images of Trapthe next film by M.Night Shyamalan in which the director with a thousand plot twists traps Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, Oppenheimer) in a concert hall. For what purpose? Behind his air of a nice dad who has come to accompany his daughter, Riley, to the concert of her favorite singer Lady Raven, the actor hides a heavy secret… He is a terrible serial killer nicknamed The Butcher, and this concert is a trap set up by the police to arrest him. Never judge a book by its cover.

M. Night Shyamalan Traps Josh Hartnett in ‘Trap’ Trailer

Trap is thus defined as an astonishing closed-door show, a life-size game of cat and mouse where the police track down a dangerous criminal who is trying to escape. From now on, no one will go to a concert in the same way.

Starting his promotional tour, the director of Split, Sixth Sense And Knock at the Cabin found a direct and comical way to talk about his latest feature film. In an interview with Empire, he had fun comparing Trap to two icons:

“And if Thesilenceofthelambs was happening at a Taylor Swift concert?”

An analogy that quickly got people talking on social media, with some Internet users taking the comparison literally and imagining which song by the American star could be played during this or that twist in the situation. And for a serial killer, nothing beats tracks from the album Reputation !

M. Night Shyamalan has also explained that, despite the originality of his script, it was partly inspired by a real trap – Operation Flagship. In 1985, 101 fugitives were arrested by the Washington police force after they accepted an invitation from a fictional television company to attend a local American football game and hope to win tickets to Super Bowl XX:

“The cops were literally dressed as cheerleaders and mascots. These guys were dancing when they showed up. And they got caught. It was a hell of a turnaround and so funny.”

In the new trailer for Trap There is a palpable tension and a frightening confusion between the cries of fear and those of joy. After showing how Josh Hartnett understood the trap he had fallen into, we discover here the efforts he makes, the chaos he tries to sow to escape. It is by being close to his enemy that suspicions diminish. “There is no chance of getting out”we hear during this very effective montage.

Trap will be released in France on August 7.
