Mati Diop and Bruno Dumont awarded at the 2024 Berlinale

Several French filmmakers were rewarded this weekend.

The 74th Berlinale concluded this Sunday in the German capital. Chaired by actress Lupita Nyong’o, this edition rewarded several French films, notably Dahomeyby the Franco-Senegalese director Mati Diop. She who won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 for Atlantice was honored with the Golden Bear for this documentary. A nice blow for its distributor, Les Films du Losange, which had already obtained this same price last year thanks to another noted documentary, On Adamant by Nicolas Philibert.

Atlantic: Wave to the soul (Review)

Bruno Dumont received the Silver Bear for his sci-fi film The Empire. The director of Little Quinquin caused a sensation by making his smartphone speak for him on stage during his acceptance speech. The director is tied with the South Korean Hong Sangsoo For A Traveler’s Needs.

Among the other French works awarded, there are two documentaries: A family by Christine Angot and Direct Action by Guillaume Cailleau and Ben Russell. The animated short film Butterfly by Florence Miailhe was also honored, and we find other French co-productions among the long list. Here are the details, shared by The French Film.
